What is SEWA in Sharjah?

While the Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority was earlier owned by a private company, it was later merged into the UAE Electricity & Water Department and named Sharjah Electricity, Water & Gas Authority (SEWA).

SEWA is a government agency responsible for providing utilities such as gas, electricity, and water in the Sharjah emirate of the UAE. SEWA has several offices throughout Sharjah and numerous customer care centres to cater to the needs of its customers. It has also made access to services like SEWA bill enquiries, payment of bills, profile updates, and customer account cancellations via the SEWA e-portal.

How to Set Up a New SEWA Connection in Sharjah?

You must apply for electricity, water, and gas connections before moving into your new house in Sharjah. The first step is to find the nearest SEWA service centre and submit an application for connection. The section discusses the application process and required paperwork.

1. SEWA Electricity Connection

After submission of the application to the nearest service centre, you would need to submit the following documents:

• Contract of tenancy
• Emirates identity
• Certificate of ownership
• Copy of passport
• Affection plan
• Building permit
• Professional licence of ‘Economic Development Department contractor’
• A copy of the trade licence (SEWA-approved by electric contractors)

For permanent connections, you would be required to submit the following documents along with the ones listed above:

• SEWA approved drawings
• Thermal insulation inspection application
• Initial electrical inspection application

To install a new meter or increase the meter load, additional documents required include:

• NOC from owner
• Previous invoice
• Building permission

2. SEWA Water Connection

Along with the water connection application, you would be required to submit the following documents to the nearest SEWA customer centre to start accessing the water services –  

• Copy of tenancy agreement
• Copy of ownership certificate
• Affection plan
• Emirates ID
• Completion certificate approved by the municipality
• Copy of trade licence of building contractors

To change the water meter or for relocation, the following documents would be required:

• Copy of affection plan
• Confirmation letter from the customer care centre
• Previous invoice

3. SEWA Gas Connection

To install a gas connection or complete the conversion of your existing one, you can view the list of contractors licenced by the Directorate of Natural Gas on the official SEWA website. You can then select a contractor and submit the following documents along with the application for a new connection:

• Gas contractor confirmation letter
• Affection plan
• Drawings approved by SEWA gas pipe
• Building permit
• Trade licence (copy) from contractor
• Fee payment for building completion certificate

If you wish to apply for converting your cooker to natural gas, you would need to submit an application for the same via SEWA’s official website. The only thing to be provided from your end here is the account verification number found on your invoice. Afterwards, the authorities will begin the process and implement the changes.

Services Charges for SEWA Account Connection

A security deposit has to be paid by the user as per their leasing contract type. However, the security deposit amount will depend on the contract and residential units.

SEWA provides numerous options using which you can pay SEWA bills online. Listed below are the key modes available for the same –

1. E-Pay through SEWA Website

To register with SEWA online portal, you would first have to update SEWA with your personal information by any of the following methods:

• Residential customers can register via the portal or the smart app (the account number would be required)
• You can update the details via email by sending an email to regsupport@sewa.gov.ae (with the following documents attached) – 
• Copy of Emirates ID (back and front)
• Trade licence for commercial and industrial accounts

Besides the documents, you must also include the following details in the email:

• Account ID
• Emirates ID

• Email Address
• You can also visit any of the customer care branches and get your profile registered on SEWA
• For registration, you can connect with SEWA's call centre by dialling 991

After registration, you will receive a confirmation mail from SEWA. You can then visit the SEWA official website and click ‘register’. Once you find the account details, fill up the form and follow the activation process through SMS and email.

SEWA smart app is a bilingual mobile application available in English and Arabic as well as android and iOS versions. Besides allowing users to pay SEWA bills, this smart app also provides the following functionalities:

• Easy access to SEWA services on mobile platforms
• SEWA Bill inquiry and detailed view
• Latest news and activities on the app
• Check bill and payment history for the last 12 months
• Get the list of customer service centres nearby
• Locate payment channels' distances using GPS
• Option to easily calculate CO2 release
• Fault reporting with photo capture and GPS location
• Direct payment of monthly bills to single or multiple accounts

Please note that you must have an online SEWA account to use the SEWA bill payment feature on the smart app. For this, you can register and open an online SEWA account through any of the methods mentioned under the section 'E-Pay through the SEWA website'. 

Upon registration, you can select the account number you wish to pay for. There are two options through which you can pay your SEWA bills on the smart SEWA app –

• Credit card
• Via the ‘payment outlet’ feature that allows you to view the nearest payment outlet as per your GPS location – you can navigate and view routes to reach the outlet using the maps within the app screen

4. Customer Service Centers of SEWA

In case you wish to pay SEWA bills offline, you can always visit one of their customer service centres. There are nine SEWA customer service offices located in Sharjah at the following addresses:

5. Etisalat

Etisalat, the Emirates Telecommunication Corporation, has also partnered with SEWA to allow users to pay their monthly SEWA bills through Etisalat electronic payments machines throughout Sharjah.

6. EsteMarat

As a user, you can also pay SEWA bills directly through the EsteMarat department or centre. 

7. SEWA Online Official Website

You can log in and pay SEWA bills online through the eService portal of the SEWA official website. Under the 'E-Services' tab, select the 'online SEWA account'. You can open the same from the official website if you don't have an online SEWA account.  

For registration or to open your account, you can use any of the following methods –

Besides the other modes mentioned in the article above, one can also find the facility for paying SEWA bills available at all automated post offices in UAE. Post offices offer these services through sophisticated Point of Sales (POS) systems that are connected directly to the SEWA computerised system, which provides real-time transaction information. 

How to Cancel SEWA Account in Sharjah?

If you plan to vacate your home, you can quickly terminate your SEWA connection in Sharjah by following the simple steps discussed below –  

Procedure for SEWA Disconnection

Here are the steps to be followed –

• Submit a disconnection request to SEWA
• The connection and disconnection department will assign a technician
• The technician will visit your property, get all essential details like last metre readings, and forward the same to the closing account section
• SEWA will process the details and generate a bill with all the outstanding payments
• You would need to settle the dues if your outstanding bill exceeds the security deposit
• After all the outstanding dues are cleared, a clearance certificate will be issued for SEWA disconnection

• Emirates ID (copy)
• Deposit payment receipt
• Clearance certificates issued from Sharjah Municipality

Services Charges for SEWA Account Connection

Regular account disconnection services are free of charge. For urgent SEWA account terminations, the department charges AED 200 (AED 100 for disconnection and AED 100 for urgent refunds if the deposit does not exceed AED 10,000).
